The Council recognises the importance of the A605. It is a key route for Whittlesey, for local businesses, and for through traffic, and its condition matters for safety, reliability and confidence in the network. The Council also recognises the additional pressure on the route when neighbouring roads, including the B1040, are closed due to flooding and traffic is diverted.
The concerns raised about large and deep potholes, damage to vehicles, and the risk created when drivers take evasive action are understood and taken seriously. No-one should feel that they are forced into unsafe maneuvers to avoid defects in the road.
The Council does not wait for resurfacing schemes before dealing with safety-critical defects. Potholes that meet its safety intervention levels are repaired as a priority, based on inspections by trained highway officers, rather than solely on the length of time a report has been open.
Following the issues raised on the A605 in Whittlesey, the route has been inspected again. A monthly inspection was carried out on 25 March 2026 by a Highways Maintenance Officer, during which defects were identified on both Peterborough Road and Kings Delph. Orders have been raised for these defects to be repaired by 31 March 2026, with the next routine inspection of the route scheduled for 20 April 2026.
In addition, an order has been raised for carriageway patching works covering approximately 101m² on Kings Delph, which is currently scheduled for completion by 5 May 2026.
Pothole repairs alone are not a long-term solution. Full resurfacing is the right outcome, and the Council agrees with residents on this point. The 2026/27 Highways Capital Programme includes carriageway resurfacing on the A605.
While this work is progressed, safety repairs will continue so that residents and businesses are not left with an unacceptable situation in the meantime.
