Repairs of damage to roads and infrastructure in Newnham caused by Queens College Development in Owlstone Croft

We, the residents of Newnham, formally raise concerns about road damage and disruption caused by heavy construction traffic associated with the Owlstone Queens’ College development.

More than 50 HGV movements per day, involving vehicles weighing up to 40 tonnes, are using roads not designed for such traffic. This has damaged the road surface, sub-base, and drainage infrastructure on Grantchester Street and surrounding roads. Frequent road sweeping by the contractor has further accelerated wear, creating ruts and potholes that pose hazards to pedestrians, cyclists, schoolchildren, elderly residents, and motorists. Residents identified these risks during the planning process, and they have now materialised.

Local residents and Cambridge taxpayers should not be expected to bear the cost of repairing damage caused by a single developer.

We request that Cambridgeshire Highways Authority serve notice under Section 59 of the Highways Act 1980 on the developer and require all necessary repairs to Grantchester Street and feeder roads. Those responsible should fully fund all road, drainage, and reinstatement works needed to restore the affected infrastructure to an appropriate standard
