Undertake a complete and fundamental redesign of the Barton Road/Grantchester Street junction in conjunction with local residents and other relevant stakeholders.

We, the undersigned, believe that the current junction, which was designed and implemented without any effective local consultation, poses a high risk to pedestrians and cyclists alike by providing inadequate feedback about when it is safe to cross and by having a single phase of the traffic lights for cyclists and pedestrians to cross with no differentiation as to their 'desire lines' across the junction, which are often conflicting.  The risks to citizens are created by features such as:

a) lack of auditory feedback when it is safe to cross, so many simply set off when traffic halts - without being aware of possible traffic flows from Grantchester Street or the Driftway;

b) no pedestrian signals for those crossing the Driftway or Grantchester Street - again requiring users to 'guess' what phase is in operation;

c) having only a single phase for all pedestrian and cycle traffic with no differentiation for 'desire lines' to cross the junction

There have been a large number of near-misses and urgent action is required before there is a major accident there.
