This petition has been reviewed and the following response has been offered:
Following the closure of the above petition, please find below the steps that the County Council is taking to address the schemes identified. The disruption caused last year, when both the lane closure on the A605 King’s Dyke Bridge and the closure of the B1040 were in operation, is acknowledged, and apologies are extended for any inconvenience experienced.
The westbound carriageway, heading to Peterborough, on the Ralph Butcher Causeway at King’s Dyke continues to have one lane temporarily closed whilst the contractor, Jones Bros, prepares to undertake the necessary remedial work required to allow the road to fully reopen. This work is expected to take place over summer this year and work is being undertaken with the contractor to review the programme for this.
In the meantime, Jones Bros is using two-way traffic lights whilst the lane closure remains in place. The timing of the lights is being closely monitored and adjusted as needed. Ongoing monitoring will ensure that the most appropriate, safe traffic management is in place for everyone's wellbeing, whilst they prepare to undertake the repairs. The work will be carried out and completed under a lane closure. A full road closure will not be required.
The B1040 at East Delph is now fully open. The work to repair and safely reopen the B1040 at East Delph was completed on 10 November 2024. Contractors worked around the clock to complete the necessary structural repairs where the bank had collapsed due to erosion and this work was able to proceed ahead of schedule. It was reported to Highways and Transport Committee in March 2025, that a high-level options appraisal study will be undertaken in 2025-26 on three flood affected roads in Cambridgeshire, including the B1040 at Whittlesey, to identify potential options to mitigate future flooding events.
The current traffic management on the Ralph Butcher Causeway is recognised as a source of frustration. Traffic management will continue to be monitored and regular updates will be provided on the Cambridgeshire County Council website and as further information becomes available, it will be shared here: Whittlesey traffic update | Cambridgeshire County Council.
