Commit to transforming the pedestrian experience along the whole of Mill Road

Commit to transforming the pedestrian experience along the whole of Mill Road

This should include:

  •  wider, resurfaced pavements
  • more and improved crossings
  •  pedestrian priority at side roads
  •  better public space.

In July 2022, the county council committed to develop a public realm improvement scheme for Mill Road

In March 2025, the Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) redirected the Fulbourn Greenway along Mill Road. It also committed to work with other local authorities to develop a vision for the whole of the street. The GCP is unable to deliver a solution for the whole of Mill Road alone, so the city and county councils must pledge their support and dedicate skills and resources to this project.

We are calling on Cambridgeshire County Council to step up and:

  • ensure that officers and councillors are committed to work on the Mill Road vision
  • identify funding for the implementation of improvements beyond the scope of the GCP’s Greenway project.

Thousands of people walk and wheel along this street every day. They deserve an improved pedestrian experience.

Please commit to make Mill Road better today.

This petition has been reviewed and the following response has been offered:

Following the implementation of the bus gate, data gathered demonstrates there have been improvements in the environment, and reductions of traffic and the rate of collisions on Mill Road.

The County Council is currently working with the Greater Cambridge Partnership (GCP) and Cambridge City Council, gathering data and putting together a programme of workshops and drop-in events for 2026, which will ensure community and business concerns and ideas are front and centre in the development of the proposals. Some members of the community have already put forward ideas, and these will be carefully considered alongside further ideas and suggestions identified by residents and business-owners during future engagement.

5th Studio, an architect and urban design company based just off Mill Road, has been commissioned to oversee the co-design work and assemble early concept designs. Community events will be hosted to ensure resident and business feedback is integral to emerging proposals.

The County Council will work with the GCP to identify and implement short, medium and long-term measures.

The GCP has allocated c. £600,000 to the design and delivery of the improvements.

Works to carry out localised repairs (patching / pothole repairs) and refresh road markings should be on site early in the new 2026/27 financial year subject to the availability of road space on the network. Available funding for these works is up to £370,000.
