Prioritise the resurfacing of Cambridge Road
We recognise the upcoming resurfacing works on the A1301 from Granham's Road to Station Road. These works do not sufficiently address the poor road quality as they fail to cover the entire affected road length.
As such, we request the urgent resurfacing of A1301 (Cambridge Road/Shelford Road), from Granham's Road to the junction of Hauxton Road. The quality of this stretch of the A1301 has deteriorated significantly in recent years, with new potholes emerging, and patched potholes re-opening. The patch-on-patch effect is atrocious, and is clearly not working given the sheer number of highways reports along the road; residents quite rightly feel unheard by the council.
The road state poses an issue to all users. Drivers frequently experience vehicle damage, typically punctures. Cyclists, given the lack of a segregated cycle lane along the entire road, face danger needing to swerve potholes, veering out into traffic. Potholes that cyclists are unable to avoid can cause a fall with significant injury. In the worst affected areas, they may choose to mount the pedestrian pavement out of necessity, which poses a hazard to those on the pathway. Additionally, potholes which are deep enough to pose a hazard to cyclists may not be sufficiently wide/deep to warrant 'emergency' repair, which prolongs the period that damage can be done.
How much longer must we put up with the ever-worsening and dangerous condition of this road? When will the council allocate resources necessary to fix it?
Quotes from concerned residents:
“This road and cycle lane are a busy commuter path and as a resident of this road I am continually observing cars and lorries swerving to avoid pot holes”.
“The road looks like a road that you would see in a war zone and it is shocking that it has been in this state for so long”.
“Whole road surface needs redoing from the crossroads down into Shelford!”.
